HOPES DASHED, DREAMS SHATTERED AS NIGERIA BOWS OUT OF THE FIFA WORLD CUP 2018

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have bowed out of the ongoing Fifa World Cup 2018 holding in Russia after losing to the Messi led - Argentine team.

The game which was tipped as a Make or Mar fixture began in very surprising fashion when Banega sent a perfectly lofted ball to Messi in the 14th minute, with the striker placing it into the far corner of the Nigerian post to give Argentina a goal lead.

Nigeria drew level in the 51st minute of the second half when Moses neatly dispatched the ball into the net from the penalty spot after the referee had awarded a penalty kick for rough handling of a Nigerian player prior to a corner, making Moses the second player in Nigeria's history to score a World Cup Penalty (Yakubu was the first, scoring against South Korea in 2010), but it was not to be a happy ending on the night for the Super Eagles of Nigeria as Marcos Rojo scored the second goal for Argentina, sending the team out of the 2018 World Cup.

Marcos Rojo goal in the 86th minute was only his 3rd goal for his country in over 50 appearances, and the one of his previous goals had also come against Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup and Messi's goal against Nigeria was the 100th goal of the World Cup.
