In what was a twitter thread started by renowned broadcaster and media entrepreneur @TheFavoredWoman on the value the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) can add to one’s life, several persons have come out to support the ideology, sharing on the social platform what they gained during the compulsory 12months training exercise.

The thread started with @TheFavoredWoman tweeting:
“NYSC is
what you make of it. That 'useless' 1 year made me a solid broadcaster. I
learned how to write, edit and read news. I made the leap into radio, I
volunteered at a station to work/learn unpaid for 9 months. And I built
relationships that ensured I'm still employed today
“It
probably sounds 'cool' to diss that 1 year and call it useless these days and
yeah, the camps and admin process is horrible, but you can choose how you want
that one year to affect your life and move you towards actualizing your dreams.
“The attitude
you approach it with, will determine if it's 'useless' to you or not. You're
not really 'serving your country', you're building yourself.”
The following
were responses her thread generated:
@canoncrested:
‘100% agree. I worked two radio jobs at the time myself and produced a spelling
bee competition for schools in the state. Still one of the most existing years
in my life. And it was in Bauchi..’
@czarohm:
‘NySC gave me the opportunity to sponsor 60+ kids to school, organize spelling
bee, debate/quiz competition, organize excursion for senior secondary student
to a mechanized farm, afford me the task to write the first Animal husbandry
textbook for senior secondary school students.’
@ToksDuttie:
‘You are so right, NYSC is what you make of it and how you see/approach it.
Your service year can be fun and interesting or boring and stressful it's all
about how you face it. Mine was insightful and easy learnt a lot in that 1yr
tha prepared me for the present.’
@brown_buzi:
‘My service year was such a bliss, I didn't have time for fun, I learnt
photography, I worked in the state's radio station, I went to computer school
and also taught 3 subjects at my PPA, this was in Ekiti State, I had an amazing
experience.’
@Enaholo_Ose:
‘NYSC directed me to what I'll want to spend the rest of my life doing--
alleviating suffering and providing quality healthcare among vulnerable groups’
@ibnwalee:
‘My brother currently serves at a law firm in Abuja and he's absolutely
enjoying it. He's been opportuned to see top lawyers(SANs) argue out cases in
the highest courts(supreme), NYSC gives him the opportunity to learn the
profession and prepare him for the real world.’
@czarohm:
‘Through NYSC I learnt web design and web programming from NIIT, photography
and photo editing and met incredible personnel that introduced me to Twitter @muyiscoi and encourage the fire in me
to write, read and explore myself more!’
