Monday, June 10, will be the one year anniversary of the passing on of the much beloved Nigerian reggae toaster and iconic musician, the Rub-a-Dub Master, Ras Kimono Onwubuya.
Kimono’s first daughter, Oge Kimono who is a reggae toaster in her own right and crown princess of the Kimono legacy is pulling every string to ensure that June 10 is massively celebrated in Nigeria as Ras Kimono Memorial Day. Assisting Oge to make the 1st Ras Kimono Memorial Day truly memorable are heavy hitters in the Nigerian entertainment industry such as the COSON Chairman and bosom friend of the late Ras Kimono, Chief Tony Okoroji; the highly respected Guvnor of Niteshift, Mr. Ken Calebs Olumese; experiential marketing guru and owner of the new Roots FM, Mr. Kunle Onime; the great Afro Beat apostle, Dede Mabiaku, etc. Already, a big jostle is going on as various artistes seek a place to participate in the events of the Ras Kimono Memorial Day.
The celebrations on Monday, June 10 will be in two phases. The first phase will be the ”Ras Kimono Memorial Lecture” which will hold in the morning at the Magnificent COSON House in Ikeja. Delivering the main lecture titled ‘Revolutionary Music for Equality & Justice’ will be Nigeria’s undisputed authority on Creative arts and a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, Prof Duro Oni who until recently was Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Lagos. Some of the highlights expected at the Memorial Lecture are the presentation on the COSON House mega screen of “Good-Bye Ras Kimono”, an updated version of the much talked about multi-dimensional documentary on the life and times of Ras Kimono scripted and produced by the master himself, Chief Tony Okoroji. At the event, a new era of the Kimono legacy will begin with the launch of the 1st ever album of Oge Kimono titled, “Good Ole Days”. Master of Ceremonies will be the irrepressible Koffi Tha Guru.
The second phase of the Ras Kimono Memorial Day will kick off at 7.00 pm on June 10 at the famous Niteshift Colieseum on Salvation Road, Ikeja. Lighting up the night will be the Ras Kimono Memorial Jam which will have a kaleidoscope of Nigerian artistes such as Soundsultan, Buchi, Dezign, Righteousman, King Wadada e.t.c with blistering performances in honour of their fallen colleague, the unforgettable Ras Kimono.
